Whale Watch

Did you know that a giant sperm whale can grow up to 20 metres in length? These impressive animals use Kaikoura, New Zealand as a migratory route year round. Typically the males are off the coast and the females are elsewhere in warmer waters. The sperm whales love the continental shelf and the nutrients and food that it provides. They dive down below the surface for around an hour to feed. Then they surface to relax and poop. :0) They stay on the surface for around 20 minutes and then submerge themselves again. They are an amazing sight to see.

On our boat trip we were also very lucky to view many pods of dusky dolphins and the rare and endangered hectors dolphins. Flying around the sea were a few albatross. What wingspans! The coast is riddled with fur seals sunning themselves and playing in the water. What a great place to visit!
